After 8 years in jail, Wild Bill fights to be a father again, opposed by gangsters, the authorities and his own sons.
After 8 years in jail, a criminal returns to his family, which has been reduced to two teenage sons. Though not quite voluntarily, he returns to his role as a father. In Hollywood this would be a premise for the mother of all feel-good films, with life lessons, insights and poignant moments galore. With his feature debut, British Dexter Fletcher turns it into a kitchen sink drama/comedy, in which life at the ragged end of London is anything but romanticised. Besides poverty, drugs, crime and violence, there is also, just as in regular life at the underbelly of society, love, loyalty and lots of humour – in the shape of sharp dialogues (between father Wild Bill and his old partners in crime, for example) and absurd situations (Bill’s carnal birthday present to Dean). All of this is set to the beat of a fine soundtrack, with songs by The Clash, This Is Freedom and the eternally uplifting Eddy Grant.
