This atmospheric horror film, directorial debut of young actress Carlson Young, references many of its predecessors – from the dark fairy tales of Grimm to Alice in Wonderland and Nightmare on Elm Street. And it’s exactly that curious mix of influences that makes the short stand on its own.
By day, Margaret lives in a world that could easily exist in the universe of Sofia Coppola, replete with pastels and soft lighting. But her dreams appear to be created by different directors: the nihilism of Werner Herzog, the morbidity of Lars von Trier, the horror of Dario Argento. So what happens when those two worlds collide?
As an actress Carlson Young is well versed in the horror genre – she was one of the leads in the TV adaptation of Scream, which is also where she found actresses Brianne Tju en Zena Grey for her first film as a writer and director. But unlike the show they have in common, Young’s debut film treads a very different, far darker and more atmospheric path. The open ending could mean we have a longer version of The Blazing World to look forward to. Or does it mean something else?
