A listless summer day in Istanbul. A young couple escapes the city, to a small island looking out on the endless sea of concrete tower blocks. It leads to light-hearted contemplations on life in the big city, where decay goes hand in hand with reconstruction. That, and public fitness equipment.
A lot can change in a year when it comes to the image of a city. When film student Eren Aksu – born in Istanbul, now living in Berlin – made this short film last year, he couldn’t have known about the violent coup his hometown would see earlier this year. This cold dose of reality gives both the languid summer heat and the images of dilapidated urban architecture of Cosmorama an unexpected deeper meaning.
