Mare Nostrum
A father and his young daughter at the beach. As the title of the film reveals, they’re at the Medditerranean. Going off of the nature around them, their looks and the man’s clothes we can deduce that the film does not take place on the European side of the sea. The love between father and daughter is palpable, and yet he throws her off a pier into the sea. Slowly the directors, married couple Rana Kazkaz and Anas Khalaf, uncover his intentions.
Kazkaz and Khalaf met in France, and lived in Damascus with their two children until the Syrian revolution. This personal background has a large impact on the film, specifically referencing the stream of refugees that desperately try to reach European soil from their war-torn countries, further foregrounded by the documentary images at the end of the film.
