The prepubescent title character has two days left to fulfill his “level 1 sexuality requirement” – kissing. Otherwise he’ll be held back in the alternate reality of Wyrm, where your sexual progress is monitored as closely as your academic achievements.
Director Christopher Winterbauer is also a creator of corporate videos through his production company Oddly Specific Media. ‘Oddly specific’ could definitely also be used to describe Wyrm. From one simple idea, Winterbauer performs an impressive feat of world building – because when kissing is a required skill, there must also be leaflets (“Cousins don’t count!”) and a dumpy official to document things.
In the middle of that lightly absurd world and the brightly coloured styling, Wyrm also manages to make you feel something. As Winterbauer puts it: “It’s a story about falling behind, about kissing and fingering, about feeling sexual but not being sexual, about falling in love and awkwardness.” A story, then, about being young. Including the best description ever of what it feels like when two teens french kiss for the first time.
