Tangles and Knots

When you see them together, blonde mother Michelle and daughter Laura look more like best friends: they play with each other’s hair and lounge around the pool. But when Laura’s teenage friends join them for a party, and mother catches the boys’ eye, the idyll starts showing tears.
Like their characters, actresses Odessa Young (1998) and Leeanna Walsman (1979) are almost twenty years apart. At times, that gap between mother and daughter in Tangles and Knots is nigh invisible, at other times it’s painfully clear. Director Renée Marie Petropoulos (born in Australia, of Greek descent, and educated as a filmmaker in the US) partially based her third short film on her own complex relationship with her mother.
It shouldn’t be remarkable these days, but it is: the film was made by a largely female crew. Pay special attention to the terrific photography by Zoe White, who, thanks to her work on these and many other gorgeous short films, is now one of the directors of photography on the second season of The Handmaid’s Tale.
