Manivald is in his thirties, and a fox. Despite his many academic achievements, he still lives at home with his mother. Their situation comes under stress when mother and son both fall for handyman Toomas, a wolf with a pronounced sixpack.
Animator Chintis Lundgren – no relation to Dolph, as far as we know – in her absurdist social satire Manivald pleads the case of her may contemporaries she has watched struggling to grow up. Whether it’s down to Peter Pan Syndrome or the mother’s controlling nature – she may be a fox, but you could still describe her as a tiger mom – the film leaves open to interpretation.
Lundgren has used animal characters to look at all-too-human behaviour before. “They’re simple to draw and I’m lazy”, she quips in the presskit for Manivald. But there’s also a more serious reason for it: anyone can relate to an anthropomorphised animal. “Anyone can recognize themselves in a fox or in a rabbit, but if it was a bald man with a moustache, the character would only be relatable to other bald, moustached men.”
