Georges happens upon the mother of all jackets. A deerskin cowboy jacket, with fringes and everything. The jacket to make all other jackets redundant – and so all other jackets must disappear. Welcome to the wonderfully absurd world of Quentin Dupieux. Killer style!
“It’s not bizarre at all. It’s genius.” Georges says this to convince Denise, a girl he’s just met, of his wild plan. But in some way it also refers to the entire cinematic oeuvre of Dupieux, the man who once gained worldwide fame as a music producer under the name Mr. Oizo. He’s made seven feature films so far, and in each of them he has gleefully ignored the normal conventions of plot progression and character development.
Which doesn’t mean his films have nothing to say. While Deerskin is filled with absurd tangents and people keep on doing things that people would never do, it is about something. There’s a reason why Georges films everything he does. And there’s a reason Denise becomes his editor – she once put Pulp Fiction in chronological order (it sucked). In his obsession with his deerskin jacket, Georges also holds up a mirror to us: all that ostentation, is that really all there is?
