“Officer Arnaud loves his mom.” That all that the official plot synopsis of Thunder Road offers, and that’s actually all we see in Thunder Road. But with that simple setup, creator Jim Cummings manages to create surprising depth in a single shot.
Thunder Road can truly be called a one-man show. Cummings wrote, directed and plays the role of officer Arnaud – really the only person appearing in the film. The only other lead role goes to the Bruce Springsteen song that gives the film its title, performed in its entirety by Arnaud during his eulogy at his mother’s funeral. Cummings wrote a personal letter to Springsteen asking permission to show it without having to pay through the nose.
