On the eve of Chinese New Year, a panicked couple reports their 13-year-old daughter as missing. The officer on duty isn’t providing any help, and even the teacher that saw her last wants nothing to do with it. Slowly, the girl’s mother is getting deperate.
Originally born in China, and moved to Australia, director Qiu Yang frames her far-from-gentle night through carefully framed, sober shots. When winning the Palme d’Or for best short in May, he may have given the shortest speech in Cannes’ history: “Fucking Amazing.” Qiu is currently working on a feature film adaptation of his graduation project Under the Sun.
