“Just kiss the canvas. Not with your mouth! Don’t ever kiss the canvas with your mouth.” The look on Bob Ross-like TV painter Joan’s face suggests she’s speaking from experience. It’s the first sign that this lady might be a little bit off.
If you were at Pluk 2017, you might have seen the short VHS porn pastiche Hot Winter: A Film by Dick Pierre by director Jack Henry Robbins. If so, you’ll know what to expect stylistically from Painting with Joan. Robbins (son of actor Tim) once again proves himself a master of the carefully recreated aesthetic of endlessly replayed video tapes.
“Remember: every brush stroke is a sentence in a story”, Joan tells us. The story she paints starts off as a hillscape like the hundreds that Bob Ross used to slap together, but it soon devolves in unpredictable ways. Oh, and stick around during the credits, because they only mark the halfway point of this five minute short.
