Nocturne
- short
- 5'
Under frail moonlight, mysterious creatures gather in a clearing in the woods for an equally mysterious game, in this dark fairy-tale short. And it looks like they could lose a part of themselves in it.
Let’s check Wikipedia: in music, a ‘nocturne’ is a “composition that is inspired by, or evocative of, the night”; romantic or dreamlike. That certainly applies to this stop-motion short. And even the arrangement of most nocturnes, with a lyrical melody over an arpeggiated (broken) bass, is relevant.
In the dark clearing where Breymann’s mysterious creatures gather, their bets are placed by small pieces of the players separating and together morphing into something new. Director Anne Breymann – a former Artist in Residence at the Dutch Institute for Animation Film (now sadly defunct) – uses a light touch to create a world as enigmatic as it is intriguing.
