What is true love? And what is true film? Everything runs together in the playful Love Story.
Because he couldn’t come up with a screenplay for his love story, New Zealand director Florian Habicht asked random New Yorkers for help. A taxi has to run over her foot!, one of them suggests – and in the next scene we see that happening. A foot massage!, is the next suggestion – and that is also filmed. But when Florian, who plays the romantic lead himself, seems to really fall for the beautiful Russian girl he cast as his lover, the line between fiction and reality begins to blur. First for themselves, and then also for the viewer. Because when she rejects him and says: ‘You know I’m just acting, right?‘ – is that the documentary part or is she acting that as well? The only certain thing is the love story between the filmmaker and summertime New York, with her surprisingly compassionate citizens.
