Gangster of Love

Nedo Babic, nicknamed Gangster, desperately tries to find suitable partners for the singles who are registered with his Nada organisation – which is Croatian for ‘hope’. Nedo is friendly and polite, and even comes along on that oh so very important first date to make sure everything goes smoothly. As well as the matchmaker himself, the documentary also follows some of the amorous candidates. Like Maja, the Bulgarian single mother whose young son appears to be a stumbling block for a lot of potential partners. And Peter, half German, half Croatian, who just can’t find love in Germany and has pinned all his hopes on finding a Croatian girl. Or, well, Ukrainian would be acceptable as well. And then there’s Marin, who has travelled the world and is contemplating a lonely future. His demands are low, but his defeatism is getting in his way. Interviews, intakes and dates are interspersed with images of Croatian traditions and reflections on love – ‘ a woman holds up three corners of the house, a man just one’.
