Fish Story

Now that sharing insignificant details online has become commonplace, we are at risk of losing the tradition of oral history. But they do still float around, the stories that only seem to live in the memories of those who were there – and those who have heard the stories told. Caspar Salmon’s family, for instance, has a tale that has been going around for thirty years. But is it true?
As the story goes, nana Salmon once attended the grand opening of an aquarium on the Welsh island of Anglesey in the eighties. The aquarium had invited locals to the opening, all of whom had fishy surnames. The attendees also received ‘their fish’ wrapped in a newspaper, given away by popular TV weatherman Michael Fish. Caspar’s friend Charlie Lyne is moved by this corny tale to go on a quest to uncover the origins of this story, cold-calling every Mr. Mullet and Mrs. Herring to ask whether they remember such a curious event.
