Carmina or Blow Up

Carmina Barrios acts, but she plays herself. And her daughter Mary plays her daughter. In a film by her son, comedian Paco León.
Carmina or Blow Up resides somewhere halfway between fiction and documentary. It’s not for nothing that the credits of the film end with this quote by writer Tom Clancy: ‘The difference between fiction and reality? Fiction has to make sense.’
And thus Paco Léon creates a comic blow-up of the back streets of Seville – based on fact, but not quite believable. It’s as if he filmed the tall tales that were told in his family. Remember that time when Carmina went after the thieves who stole her car and chased them off? And remember when Carmina came up with that plan to capitalise on all the times she was robbed and the insurance screwed her? Léon swears that some of the stories are true – but of course he won’t tell which ones.
