She could have led a life of luxury: but that would have been with a monster of a mother and a pit-bull of a step-father. So, pole dancer Nelly instead chooses to work in a sleazy strip club in Athens – until she is saved by one of her regular clients, Markos.
But this affair doesn’t exactly give her more independence. Nelly ends up in an empty theatre, inhabited by outcasts who practice street tricks among the cockroaches. The dancer is allocated her role: while she swings her hips, Markos relieves the onlookers of their wallets.
Her longing for freedom grows through Jonas, a housemate who starts a new life as a woman to stay out of the hands of the mafia. The underworld casts a long shadow over the lives in Broadway, but also maintains a mysterious distance. Which heightens the atmosphere of director Christos Massalas’s psychological thriller even more.
Director Christos Massalas creates a colorful world of cast-offs and hustlers, set on the fringes of a city leveled by the Greek economic crisis. – Variety
